If you'd driven down Rehoboth Avenue toward the Boardwalk and turned your head to the left just before the canal in the past week, you have noticed the progress being made at Shoal Harbor.  All 28 of these stylish townhomes were under contract before the first nail was driven and their buyers are eager for their new homes to be completed.  The streets are laid and future residents of Building C are getting closer to moving in!

The Importance of Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane angry iStock 680x458The key to survival and minimal property damage during a hurricane is preparedness. With a little time and money, you can secure your home and protect your family from the threat of a hurricane. Hurricane shutters are the best type of hurricane window protection for your home. Functional hurricane shutters are available in many styles and price ranges. Check with your city for local building codes related to hurricane window protection products. Second, consider the type of opening you have to cover. In some cases there may be size restrictions on the type of installation that can be done. If hiring a contractor for the job, you’ll want to consult with the installer before making a purchase.

The biggest cause of damage in a hurricane is high wind and the flying debris that is picked up by the wind. Hurricane preparedness begins when you landscape your home. For example, don’t plant large landscape trees close to the house. Falling branches can break windows or even cave in a roof.

Preparing your yard is another important step. Lawn ornaments and decorations such as birdbaths, small statues, birdhouses and feeders, grills, patio furniture and children’s toys should all be brought indoors before a storm.

Develop an emergency plan so that each member of your family knows where to go in the event of a hurricane--preferably a room without any windows. Be sure to stock this spot with emergency water, nonperishable food and supplies.

Lastly, don’t be a hero. If your city or county is recommending that everyone evacuate, then heed the warning. While no one wants to leave their home and risk it being destroyed, it’s still far better that you are not inside when damage occurs. There are many shelters set up throughout Coastal Delaware during an anticipated storm. Plan ahead by knowing the locations of the nearest shelter and emergency phone numbers.

Many lives are unnecessarily lost each year to hurricanes. Remember, preparedness is the key to minimizing property damage and loss of life in emergency situations. With a small investment in time and money , you can prepare your home and family and protect yourself against the threat of a hurricane.
